A Summer Blessing
Go now, students and know that the Spirit of Jesus will be watching you.
Go now and enjoy God’s summer gifts of warm sun, cooling water, and long light days.
Go now, students, with the gift of faith,
that might see God’s hand in all your work and play.
Go now with the gift of hope, that you might offer love and care to all you meet.
Go now with the gift of knowledge, remembering all that you have learned.
With God’s help, live it.
Go now, student, with these words of Jesus in your hearts:
“I will not leave you alone; I am with you always.”

As principal of St. Dominic C.S.S., I have had the great opportunity and blessing to be a part of the St. Dominic School Community over the last three years. Next year, my journey with our Board will take me to St. John Vianney Catholic School to serve this community in Barrie. Mr. Brian McKenzie, principal at Guardian Angels Catholic School and previously vice principal at St. Joseph's High School has been appointed as principal to St. Dominic for next year.
It has been my privilege over the years to work and serve with you in this community. I thank you for the knowledge, support, and faith based community that you have provided to me. Debating Key Issues - Model G8 Summit
Grade 11 and 12 students from St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School in Bracebridge learned how to be international diplomats. Students were able to play the role of world leaders and debate key global issues at a Model G8 Summit held at Taboo Resort in Gravenhurst on March 26th.
When the world learned that the G8 Summit was to be held in Huntsville in June 2010, the Canadian government also announced that a G8 Summit Youth Program would be part of this exciting event. This youth engagement strategy included a Model G8 Summit for Grade 11 and 12 students. There is also a My Muskoka Art Competition for Kindergarten to Grade 5 students and a Multimedia Muskoka Competition for Grades 6 – 10 students. This is all part of a strategy to help students get a better understanding of the G8 Leaders Summit.
At the Summit, 12 students from 10 local high schools in Muskoka and surrounding areas, including St. Dominic Catholic Secondary School, were invited to play the role of G8 leaders. In addition to presenting positions, participating in debates and developing communiqués, the students heard from several motivational speakers throughout the day. At the conclusion of the Summit, student delegations also had to respond to mock journalists at a press conference – quite a day!
The student delegations came prepared to discuss, negotiate and debate global issues such as countering international terrorism, reducing global poverty, responding to climate change and rebuilding the global economy – all topics to be discussed at the real G8 Leaders Summit in June. To prepare for this Model Summit, students spent weeks researching the G8 countries and their positions on these key topics. St. Dominic represented the United States of America. They learned many skills including negotiating, reasoning, international diplomacy, and, as Minister Clement noted, “…using ideas and discussions instead of war” to solve world problems.

Broadcast Your Smile
Parents have a lot of things to worry about these days. Affording dental treatment for your child shouldn’t be one of them. If you’re not covered by dental insurance or can’t afford the cost of treatment you may be eligible for help. Teens are now included in the coverage for urgently needed dental care through The Children in Need of treatment program. The program offered through the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit, covers the cost of urgent dental care such as fillings and extractions for children and teens under the age of 18.
The Dental Team will be visiting our school on May 17 from 9:00am to 3:00pm and will be offering free dental screenings and a free “smile kit” (gum, locker mirror, pencil case, toothbrush and toothpaste)
For more information on the program call Your Health Connection at 721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520 ext 8804 (Mon. to Fri. 8:00am to 4:30pm) or visit www.simcoemuskokahealth.org
